    Farmer Brown Went to Town

    February 14, 2020February 14, 2020/Christy

It may seem that buying organic produce is so much more expensive that “regular” produce, but there are ways to keep switching to organic produce less expensive.

    Let’s take a look…

    ***********

    Food Coops

One way that you can possibly start buying organic foods for far less is to join a food co-op.

A food coop involves having a specific drop-off point where you can get a basket of whatever fruits and veggies are in season and typically grown locally.

Many food co-ops give you a discount for becoming a member, allow you to exchange volunteer work for credit at the store or for your membership fees, or give you another discount if you order by the case or bag.

Here in Arlington, Texas…the local food coop is Arlington Foodies.

    Farmer’s Markets

The When…Find out where the closest farmers market is…and the days and hours it is open.

    .

    The Who…

Get to know your local farmers because they are authorities on what they sell.

Find out which local growers supply your nearest health food store.

Even though farmer’s markets typically run only during certain months, these same vendors may individually sell you certain foods—such as eggs, cheese, preserved foods and root vegetables—all year long.

Walk around and check out all of the stands first. You’d hate to go ahead and buy peaches and then find better quality peaches at a lower price further down the aisle.

Going early means that you will get the best selection of food items. Going late means that you will get the lowest prices because most vendors would rather sell at a lower price than have to take the produce home with them.

The What…Buy produce when it is in season….(more on this later)…because this will mean that you end up getting the freshest produce for rhe lowest prices.

The How Much…Prices at the farmer’s market will be comparable to those at your grocery store, but food from the farmer’s market is better because ir,,,

    • Better Quality…Pride in quality of produce grown vs mass manufacturing
    • Fresher…mass produced produce found in your local grocery store has probably been sitting around for weeks without being sold
    • Nutritional Value…fruit begins to lose its nutritional value as soon as it’s picked, meaning that you are not getting the full nutriental value when you buy produce at your local grocery store

The Which…Some of the better things to buy at the farmer’s market instead of your local grocery store…it you’re not buying all of your produce at the farmer’s market, are…

    • —blueberries
    • —cantaloupe
    • —cucumbers
    • —lettuce
    • —melons
    • —pea
    • —squash
    • —tomatoes
    • —watermelon
    • —melons
